The jigging spoon is not so much a spoon as a simple bar of thin metal that sinks fast and deep. It's tailor-made for vertical fishing, and works great for prompting strikes from reluctant bass in deep or cold water. It also can be deadly effective on big trout and salmon in deep water.
Park your boat along the edges of creek channels, near deep structures, and in the middle of baitfish schools and send the jigging spoon down. Allow the lure to drop all the way to the fish, raise the rod tip high overhead, and let the lure flutter down again. The bass will usually hit as the lure falls-follow it down with your rod, keeping the line fairly taut, and watch your line for the slightest pause or twitch. If casting into a baitfish school, throw your spoon to the school and let it flutter on a free-fall.
