Most bass pros would advise against fishing for spawning fish. When you hook a nesting bass, you put her eggs at risk to predators. And protecting the fishery is a serious angler's first concern. Besides, you can usually find pre-spawn bass in cooler sections of the lake, or post-spawn bass in warmer sections of the lake.
When you're tournament fishing and don't have a choice but to go after spawners, Texas-rigged softbaits, especially salamanders, worked near spawning beds are one of your best bets. Sight fish over the beds when the water is clear enough. Use a heavy-action spinning or baitcasting outfit rigged with 12-pound line. Throw your salamander beyond the beds and let it sink. Then swim it slowly across the bottom, right through the nesting areas. Protective females will attack the lure just to get rid of it.
