Deep diving crankbaits are big, long-lipped things that can reach depths of close to 20 feet. To go as deep as possible, use a light (thin-diameter) line to decrease drag, and make long casts. For the deepest dive, drop the rod tip or even poke it underwater and use a moderately slow retrieve. Lift the rod tip if you want the lure to run a little shallower. You want to get the lure as close to the bass's nose as possible.
Crankbaits don't require a whole lot of skill to use effectively. A medium-action rod is usually best because it allows the bass to inhale the lure more deeply. The softer rod provides more cushion when you're fighting the fish, so you're less likely to rip the hooks loose.
