Crankbait: Medium Diver

Medium-depth crankbaits can cover water from 5 to about 10 feet deep, and are good for working along the edges of drop-offs and ledges. Look for submerged stumps and large rocks that allow good cover. If schooling baitfish are present, cast across the school and retrieve through the middle of it. Use a jerking retrieve to give the lure some added action, and bump against structure whenever possible. Bass are much more likely to strike if they think your lure is wounded or distressed prey.

The crankbait's lip tends to keep the hooks away from obstacles, so don't be shy about contact. Most crankbaits are buoyant and float up on a slack line's stop-and-go retrieve makes the lure dive and rise. A couple of exceptions are lipless crankbaits and many so-called "stretch" crankbaits, which are often weighted so they will suspend at a certain depth.
