The Strike - Curiosity

When bass aren't feeding, you might still get strikes with the right lure and enough patience. Land the lure close to a bass's hold to get his attention, and then leave it there. Topwater plugs, soft plastics, and jigs are the best lures to use for this job because you can leave them in one place for long periods of time.

When you see a bass moving slowly toward a topwater plug or a grub that you're dragging on the bottom, chances are he's just curious. Keep twitching and teasing him as long as he pays attention. If he takes a close-up look and swims away, however, it's time to move on.

In heavily fished lakes, bass may have already seen the latest "hot" lure too many times. In this case, something out of the ordinary may trigger the strike in a curious fish-a new lure or color, a different trailer, an unusual retrieve. When the good advice is not working, that's the time to experiment and follow hunches, even goofy ones. Find something that works, and then do more of it-you may have the next "hot" presentation all to yourself.
