The Strike - Competition

Bass are a schooling fish by nature. As with all schooling fish, they have to be good competitors to survive. Anytime one fish takes a pass at a lure, you can be pretty sure others are checking it out as well.

When you find fish schooled up in an area, use a lure suited to the depth and cover, and try to get a reaction. If nothing happens, keep switching lures until you get some attention. As soon as you can tempt one bass to move for your lure, chances are his buddies are close behind. Competition, or the fear of losing out on an easy meal, can turn a quiet school into a sudden feeding frenzy. It's not uncommon to see other fish swirling around one you are hooked, still trying to get a piece of the lure.
