The Strike - Anger
Bass will sometimes seem to strike out of sheer anger or aggravation. When they're not hungry and they don't view an intruder as a natural threat, they'll often tolerate the creature's presence. But when the intruder becomes too persistent by swimming through the hold repeatedly, bumping into nearby structure, or simply hanging around too long, a bass begins to get irritated. He may simply swim away and find another location. But if this is a prime ambush spot that he doesn't want to leave, he'll eventually abandon caution and attack. He may not be trying to kill the intruder; he might just want to intimidate it into leaving. Either way, you get the result you're after. Jigs, soft plastics, and topwaters are best, because they can be rested and twitched in one spot for long periods of time. This patient, nagging approach can push even a big wary bass over the edge.
