Bass are extremely intolerant of other fish species. Smallmouth are especially violent and will attack other fish, even larger ones, without a second thought. When a bass feels threatened by a natural intruder, he has two choices: he can attack the intruder or swim away. It's very unlikely he'll swim away from a smaller invader. Chances are he'll try to kill it.
The best way to bring out the killer instinct is by using the element of surprise. If you can drop a lure right into a bass's hold and take him off guard, he'll either nail the thing out of self-defense, or spook.
