Topwater: Prop Lures

As the name implies, a prop lure has one or more little propeller blades on it that spin and chew up the surface when you move the lure through the water. This can attract a lot of attention, looking very similar to a frog or baitfish struggling through the water. Prop baits are most effective in the shallows and over structures when the water is a little choppy. In ideal conditions, the water is warm and the fish are active, and the light is low enough that it doesn't bother bass to look up toward the sky. Prop baits are a great weapon for prompting instinct or reflex strikes. On flats and open water, try a slow retrieve with sharp snaps of the rod tip. When bass are holding or you're concentrating on spots of cover, try a twitch-pause-twitch retrieve.
