Soft Bait: Jerk Bait

Soft plastic jerk baits are designed for surface action. They're great for twitching around on or just under the surface, because they dart and turn over and fall like a wounded baitfish. And because these baits are soft and fleshy, bass are much more likely to hold onto them than a hard-bodied jerk bait.

Use plastic jerk baits in the shallows, around openings in lily pads or the edges of weed beds and other structures, in the flats, and anyplace where baitfish are in the water. They're an especially effective lure in the pre-spawn period of the spring. Match your bait to the most likely food source, or use bright colors (white, chartreuse, or bubblegum) for better visibility and strike detection. For the most effective retrieve, hold your rod parallel to the water and snap the rod sideways to jerk the bait. Reel in the slack, pause, and give it another tug.
