Weedless spoons are a big favorite of bass anglers who like reaching big bass deep in heavy vegetation. The lure features a strong wire weedguard to keep the hook free of entanglements, and a wide spoon body to wobble and skitter across the surface. It is weedless enough for you to pull it right across a thick mat of lilies. With luck, bass lurking underneath will track the lure's movement and smash up through the cover to nail it.
Most anglers add to a weedless spoon with some kind of skirt and/or trailer. A plastic worm, pork frog, or grub can be threaded onto the hook or even the weedguard to give the lure more wave and flutter. In thick cover, heavy baitcasting gear is a must. Toss the lure right into the middle of the weeds and use a steady crankbait retrieve. The spoon will flash and wiggle like a silvery baitfish, and the trailer will provide added action.
Other effective techniques include a jerk-pause-jerk retrieve right across the top of the weeds, letting the spoon tumble down into any open pockets.
